Depth Spiritual Direction

In today’s world, spiritual direction is often understood as a gentle, ongoing form of accompaniment. A director listens with you for the subtle movements of the Holy in your life, offering support as your relationship with God unfolds. It is usually not overtly problem-centred.

Much of my time is devoted to walking alongside people in this way, often for many years. Because of the ongoing nature of this work, my diary now rarely has openings for new long-term directees.

Yet over the years I have also been approached by many people seeking help for deeper psychospiritual issues — struggles that neither regular spiritual direction nor psychotherapy always feels able to address. Therapists may feel hesitant to explore explicitly spiritual experience, while spiritual directors may feel unprepared to work with the psychological layers beneath a person’s spiritual difficulties. So where can people go?

Below are some of the concerns people have brought — struggles that can feel confusing, isolating, or spiritually destabilising:

Common concerns include:

  • Difficulty receiving or trusting God’s love due to hidden inner resistance

  • A painful gap between believing in God’s love and experiencing God as distant, angry, or punitive

  • Persistent feelings of unworthiness or shame before God

  • Recurring emotions or behaviours that conflict with one’s spiritual values (shadow material)

  • Unwanted resistance to prayer, meditation, or contemplative stillness

  • A sense of inner blockage or “stuckness” on the spiritual path, hindering openness to Spirit

  • Struggles with forgiveness — towards oneself or others

  • Themes arising through dreams or dreamwork

  • Difficulty moving beyond early, fear-based images of God, or the effects of spiritual trauma

‘Our real journey in life is interior; it is a matter of growth, deepening, and of an ever greater surrender to the creative action of love and grace in our hearts. Never was it more necessary for us to respond to that action.’ Thomas Merton

These types of challenges call for a space where psychological insight and spiritual discernment can be held together with care, skill, and depth.

Recognising this gap, I now offer short-term Depth Spiritual Direction: focused sessions dedicated to specific psychospiritual issues. This is not open-ended accompaniment, but a structured, time-limited space designed for those whose spiritual journey is intertwined with deeper psychological dynamics. It is not a replacement for regular spiritual direction, but an additional pathway for those seeking specialised support.

Drawing on my decades of experience in spiritual direction, theological study, and depth psychology, I offer a dedicated space where these worlds can meet in an integrated, compassionate, and—hopefully—transformative way.

How Depth Spiritual Direction Works

Unlike ongoing spiritual accompaniment, Depth Spiritual Direction is time-limited and issue-focused. I offer:

  • 3 to 8 sessions per year (to suit you),

  • over a period of up to two years,

  • tailored to the specific psychospiritual issue(s) you wish to explore.

This approach allows people who would not otherwise have access to me to receive specialised support for a particular season of their spiritual journey. It can stand alone or run alongside ongoing therapy or regular spiritual direction, depending on what feels right for you.

People often describe feeling clearer, more grounded, and better able to respond to what is unfolding in their inner life.

My aim is not simply to resolve problems, but to support the deeper unfolding of your spiritual life — where psychological insight and spiritual wisdom can come together to illuminate, heal, and transform.
